executive team | John Herbert

Executive General Manager

John has had over forty years experience in design, project management, commissioning, construction, operation and development of major projects and businesses, in the private sector in Australia and Asia and in the Victorian electricity industry.

John joined Transfield Project Development in 1995 after a comprehensive career at a senior level in the Victorian Power Industry, covering the planning, design, project management, commissioning, operation and maintenance of power stations, together with corporate management, including the restructuring of the Victorian Power Industry and subsequent corporatisation of the Generation Sector.

During his period with SEC Victoria, when John was responsible for power plant design, he was its representative with the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in USA, which included the monitoring and funding of research and commercial development of advanced power generation technologies, including wind and coal gasification.

With Transfield, as General Manager of the Energy Group, John was initially involved in evaluating its interest in an equity position in the privatisation of the Victorian power industry. He then participated in the successful development of the Collinsville Power Project, with particular responsibility for operation and maintenance, and subsequently as a management committee member with responsibility for construction.

John was Project Director for a number of power and energy development proposals before becoming responsible for Transfield's power station construction business in 1998 and subsequently for its Asian operations and portion of the Australian general construction business. This has involved full responsibility for construction of projects with individual values in excess of $100 million.

More recently, John has been involved in Transfield's development activities in the renewable energy sector, principally in solar, wind and biomass power generation.

John has a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) degree, with honours, from Melbourne University and is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia.
